Using Ultranet Mobile for Windows 8

The following article provides an overview of functions offered in the Ultranet Mobile app for Windows 8.

1. App pre-requisites

  • Enable integration. Your school's Ultranet subscription must include the Ultranet 2.6 Mobile Gateway plug-in. If you need this installed or are not sure what version you are running, contact the Support Team to check for you.

  • Enable accounts. User accounts requiring mobile app access must have this feature enabled under User Admin. Refer to this article for further information.

  • Configure mobile Class Pages. Only Class Pages that have been marked as a Featured page will be accessible within Ultranet Mobile. To enable this, go to the page in question, open the Page Tools menu and select "General settings",  then check the box that says "Promote as a Featured class page".

2. Getting Started

  1. Download the app from the Windows Store.

  2. Once installed, launch the app and select your school from the drop-down list provided.

  3. Next, enter your Ultranet User ID and password, then click the Sign In button to finish authenticating.

3. Navigating the app

The three spaces

Ultranet Mobile is divided into three spaces—Personal, Class and School.

  • Personal. This is how to access your personal profile page, where you can browse your uSpace Media albums.

  • Class. This space contains all your Featured Class Pages, where you can browse the Media Gallery albums and also access the Class List (Teachers only).

  • School. This is where you can browse and read School News Articles and Daily Notices.

The Personal Sidebar

Primary navigation across the three spaces is performed by pressing on the corresponding label in the Personal Sidebar towards the left.

Towards the bottom, the Personal Sidebar also contains the Capture Button, and a link to your Dashboard Notifications & Reminders (both outlined further below).

Personal space

Pressing the Personal tab in the Personal Sidebar will take you straight to your own Personal Profile in Ultranet. In the main content panel on the right, you will see your custom banner image and display picture. Below this will be a tiled listing of all the albums in your uSpace Media section.

To add a new album, simply press the "Add new album" button in the top-left position of the Album list area.

Give the album a title and description (optional) before pressing the Add button to complete the process.

To edit an existing album, swipe towards the left on the album's thumbnail.

To open an album, press on its thumbnail image. Once the album expands, you will see each media item represented with a preview thumbnail.

  • Press any media thumbnail to expand the media and view it in fullscreen.

  • Swipe downwards on a media item to edit it.
  • To add a new media item, press the "Add new item" tile that appears first in the album, and follow the on-screen prompts.

  • To play a video or audio file, press the Play button that will appear on top of the media thumbnail.

  • To exit back to album view, press the Back Arrow button towards the top-left.

If new content has been added to the Personal space and it is not showing in the app yet, swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and press the "Refresh" button.

Class space

Pressing the Classes tab in the Personal Sidebar will expand the panel and show a scrollable list of all Featured Class Pages that you can access. To scroll through the list, swipe up or down over the names shown. Once you have found the class you wish to visit, press its title in the list.

The currently selected class will load in the main content panel on the right, where you will see your custom banner image and display picture. Below this will be a class member list (Teachers only) and then a tiled listing of all the albums in your Media Gallery.

To expand your class member list, press the "View all" tile shown towards the right of the Member list preview.

Students will be listed alphabetically across the screen.

  • To visit a student's profile, press on their picture/name in the list.

  • Swipe left or right to navigate through the list.

  • Pinch to bring up the alphabet keyboard to quickly jump to students with names beginning with a particular letter.

Navigating and working with albums in the Class space or on a student's profile page is identical to the Personal space (detailed above).

If new content has been added to the Class space and it is not showing in the app yet, swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and press the "Refresh" button.

School space

Pressing the School tab in the Personal Sidebar will expand the panel and show a choice of Notices or News Articles. Selecting either will load it in the main content panel on the right.

Each notice or news article entry is displayed as a content tile.

  • Press the tile to view the full details.

  • Press anywhere outside the resulting pop-up to close the detail view.

If new content has been added to the School space and it is not showing in the app yet, swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and press the "Refresh" button.

4. Capturing and uploading media

The Capture Button

The Capture Button (located in the Personal Sidebar) provides a shortcut to quickly take a photo, record a video or audio file that can then be uploaded to Ultranet via the app.

To capture media, simply press the Capture Button, then select the media type you wish to record.

Note: Captured media gets stored in the corresponding media folder in your user Home Directory of the device (i.e. Windows\Users\Username\Pictures, Windows\Users\Username\Videos or Windows\Users\Username\Music).

Uploading media

Media can always be uploaded to your Personal Profile. If you are logged in as a Teacher, you can also upload to students' Personal Profiles or to the Class Media Gallery.

To upload media, follow the corresponding instructions for each space (Personal/Class) as detailed in section 3 above.

5. Checking notifications & reminders

The contents of your Dashboard 'Week Ahead' notifications are accessible within the app, allowing you to keep track of what is going on in your Ultranet network.

To view this, press the Notifications & Reminders button on the Personal Sidebar.
