ClassSpace: Can I merge two classes into one?

In some instances, users may find that they have two Class Pages for the same course or content (e.g. two courses at the same year level but in different timetable streams, or two different courses but with similar content and inter-class interaction needs).

Ideally, teachers would be able to merge both classes, resulting in a single Ultranet Class Page to update and post content to, but have it visible and accessible to both groups of students.

The following article outlines the steps to achieve this, depending on what mode your Ultranet site is running on.

Stand-alone mode / SMS-LMS Interoperability mode: "Sync Groups only"

If the school is running in stand-alone mode (i.e. no interoperability with your SMS) or SMS-LMS Interoperability is enabled, but synchronisation is set for "Groups only" (as opposed to "Groups and Pages"), then the solution is easy. You would just manually create a new Class Page, and set its group permissions to include the two (or more) class groups that you'd like to merge.

  1. Ask an Administrator to create a new class page for you, and give it an appropriate name that is relevant to both class groups to be merged.

  2. Navigate to this new Class Page. Click on the Page Tools menu and select "Set page access".

  3. In the resulting panel, make sure that both the class groups to be merged are added to the permissions.

  4. Once set, both sets of students can access the same content and materials on a single Class Page.

Teachers can also go one step further and create sub pages for each class group, so any topic-specific content can be separated in a hierarchical manner.

SMS-LMS Interoperability mode: "Sync Groups and Pages"

If SMS-LMS Interoperability is enabled and automatic page creation is turned on, then the neatest solution would be to create a manual 'parent' page to contain the merged classes, and to then move the other Class Pages to become sub pages of this new page.

This ensures that top-level shared material can be posted on the parent page, and any group-specific material can be posted on the corresponding sub page.

  1. Ask an Administrator to create a new class page for you, and give it an appropriate name that is relevant to both class groups to be merged. For the group settings on this page, make sure both the class groups to be merged are added as members.

Once it has been created, it should now appear on your list of Class Pages.

  2. Navigate to the Class Page for the first group to be merged. From the Page Tools menu, select "Move this page".

  3. In the resulting panel, find the newly created Class Page in step 1, then click on the move button towards the right.

  4. Repeat step 2 for the other Class Page(s) to be merged.
