Quiz module: Setting up a graded quiz

The QuizBox module in Ultranet's ClassSpace pages allows you to create graded quiz forms that can consist of multi-choice or short-answer questions. When used correctly, they can be an efficient way to gather evidence about students’ prior or current learning. You can use them before, during or after a teaching unit to support your programme planning, and to enable you to differentiate according to the needs of your students.

This tutorial will show you how to create a multi-choice or short-answer quiz for use in your ClassSpace pages. Before starting the tutorial, ensure that the QuizBox module is on your current page layout and activated (for guidance on this, read this FAQ).

Creating a new quiz form

  1. Click on the module "Options" link, and select the "Create a New Quiz" option.

  2. In the resulting pop-up window, you will be prompted to enter some details and set parameters for the quiz before creating it.


    Begin by giving the quiz a title, and then a start and end time (i.e. when the quiz will be available to be attempted by the students).


    Under the "Quiz Attempts" section, you can set the number of attempts students can have for this quiz (minimum 1, maximum 10); the duration in which the quiz must be completed in minutes (students will get a timer on-screen); and finally, if multiple attempts have been allowed, specifying a minimum 'wait' duration between attempts.


    Finally, under the "Quiz options" section, there are two selection boxes to choose if student can see their results as soon as they complete the quiz (you may not want to publish this immediately if short-answer questions require manual grading and input first); there is also the option for the students to see the class average at that point, so they know roughly how they performed against their classmates.


    Once you have set the parameters to your liking, click the "Create Quiz" button to proceed.

  3. Next, you will be taken to the Edit Quiz window, which has four tabs along the top.


    • The "Summary" tab provides you with overall statistics for the quiz once it is in progress and updated again when completed.

    • The "Questions" tab is where you create the quiz form itself and add/edit/delete questions.

    • The "Student Answers" tab is where you can bring up your class list and see their individual results (only populated when a quiz is published).

    • The "Quiz Settings" tab allows you to modify the initial parameters set when created.

Editing the Quiz Instructions

Quizzes can be set with specific instructions such as guidelines, tips or any other information that may be required before they start. A default set of instructions is inserted into every new quiz, which you can see on the "Summary" tab under the "Instructions for students" section.


To edit this:

  1. Click on the "Edit Quiz Summary" button at the bottom.

  2. In the resulting pop-up editor, make the necessary edits, then click "Update Quiz Summary" at the bottom to save your changes.

Adding questions to the quiz form

When you are ready to construct the quiz form itself:

  1. Navigate to the "Questions" tab, then click on the "Add new Question" towards the top-right.


  2. In the Edit Question panel that appears, begin by selecting the type of question you want to create from the options along the top.


    • "Choice with one answer" means a multi-choice question where only one answer is selectable.

    • "Choice with one or more answers" means a multi-choice question where several answers can be selected.

    • "Short answer question" allows the students to reply in an open text field.

    The first two type are auto-marking, because the system knows what the correct answer is. The Short Answer questions will require a manual grade entry by the teacher.

  3. Next, in the "Question" field, type in the question you wish to pose to the students. This is a text-only field, so if you wish to add imagery, mathematical/scientific formulae or other media, see the section below on adding media to questions.

  4. In the "Marks allocated" field, enter the grade weighting for this question. By default, the value is set to "1", but if you feel the question is worth more marks, then increase the number here (whole numbers only).

  5. Next, if a multi-choice question type is selected, enter the answer options in the fields provided. Each of these have a text-only field, as well as the option to add a media file to the answer option (e.g. an image).


    Select which answer(s) is the correct one by clicking on its corresponding "Correct answer" link towards the right. Should you wish to add more answer options, click on the "add a new choice" link at the bottom. Conversely, if you wish to reduce the number of answer options, click on the corresponding "remove" link to the right of the answer.

    If a short-answer question type is selected, you will just get a "Sample answer" field to enter in a model response that students can use to compare with their answer.


  6. Once you have entered the details required, click the "Save" button at the bottom to store the question and repeat the process to add more questions.

Tip: Because only the multi-choice type questions can be auto-marked by the system, if you create an entire quiz with just these types of questions, students can get a quick self-assessment result without having to wait for the teacher to enter grades after each submission.  

Adding/removing media to a question or answer

It is possible to attach an image, video or audio file to any question and/or answer in the quizzes. To insert a media object into the quiz:

  1. Navigate to the "Questions" tab in the quiz, then click on the "Edit" link for the question to be modified.

  2. Towards the left of the question or answer, you will see the default "No Media" icon. Click on it to bring up the Media Browser.


  3. To upload a file to the Media Browser, click on the "Add Media" link on the top-right. Follow the instructions to select and upload a supported image, video, audio or ZIP file.

  4. Once uploaded, your Media Browser will display all the files available. Browse for the one you want to use, then click the "Insert" button.


To remove media from a particular question/answer:

  1. Click on the media thumbnail image for that question/answer.

  2. In the Media Browser window that pops up, click on the "Clear" button on the bottom.

To delete an uploaded media object from the quiz's storage:

  1. Click on the media thumbnail image to open the Media Browser window.

  2. Search for and select the media file to be deleted from the browser. Once the preview loads up, click the "Delete" button beneath it to permanently remove the file from the quiz's storage.

Publishing the quiz

Once you have finished setting up the quiz with the relevant instructions, questions and duration parameters, the last step is to publish the quiz. Without publishing, the quiz will remain in a 'draft' state within the QuizBox—but no students will be able to see it. Publishing essentially makes the quiz available for the students to open and submit answers.

To publish the quiz, go to the "Questions" tab of the Quiz, then click the "Publish to students" button on the top-right.
